LITHIUM is Element #3

My element name is Lithium in English, Litio in Spanish, and Lithium in French and British.


The most common isotope is Li-7. There are 3 protons and 4 neutrons in my nucleus. The naturally occurring isotopes are Li-6 and Li-7. Both of their half lives are stable. Li-6's natural abundance percentage is 7.59%. Li-7's natural abundance percentage is 92.41%. Lithium's average atomic mass is 6.51557965.

A neutral lithium atom has 3 electrons in it. I have 2 shells of electrons, with 1 in the outer layer and 2 in the inner layer.

Lithium's atomic radius in picometers is 167 pm. 

Lithium is the first alkali metal in the periodic table. It is the least dense of all metals. Lithium is very light compared to other elements. 

The abundance of lithium in my body is 0.0013075200000000002 grams. Earth's abundance of lithium is 17000 ppb. The universe's abundance of lithium is 6 ppb. 
Two compounds lithium forms are spodumene (LiAlSi2O6) and petalite (LiAlSi4O10).













A Swedish chemist Johan August Arfwedson (or Arfvedson; 1792-1841) discovered Lithium. Arfwedson found the new element in a mineral that had first been identified about twenty years earlier by Brazilian scientist Jozée Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (1763-1838). Lithium was discovered in petalite when Arfvedson visited Sweden. The scientists try to isolate the element.
Lithium is used in the manufacture of special high strength glasses and ceramics. It is also used to make battery anode material. Sometimes, lithium-based compounds are used as drugs to treat manic-depressive disorders. Lithium can make high performance alloys for aircraft.

Lithium metal can be easily cut with a knife. The result is a shiny silvery surface but this soon tarnishes because of reaction with oxygen and moisture from the air. When lithium is burned in air, it makes a white lithium oxide, Li2O. Some lithium peroxide, Li2O2, also white, is also produced.
